The Caribbean Union of Teachers Salutes our Caribbean Athletes
The Caribbean Union of Teachers congratulates our athletes competing in the just concluded 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics Berlin from 15 -23 August 2009. This region has done exceedingly well. Of course we're astounded by the flashing legs of the Bolt - USAIN B O LT, who is considered to be a genetic wonder
Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Bahamas and Barbados have all graced the medal table and the Caribbean is still basking in the glory of this achievement. Barbados’ great achievement of achieving its first gold medal at the championships is definitely a call for celebration. Of course Jamaica with its track history was expected to dominate the track and we are extremely proud of our young people, who continue to show that we do have real role models here in the Caribbean.
We do congratulate Jamaica for placing third in the Championships with 136 points and capping 7 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze totaling 13 behind the super powers United States and Russia. Trinidad & Tobago captured 32 points with a medal count of 3, 1 silver and 2 bronze. The Bahamas medaled 1 silver and 1 bronze and Barbados 1 gold.
Of course we must specially mention “super-man” Usain Bolt who is still confusing the world with his power and speed. We must congratulate him for shattering records in the 100m and his own in the 200m. Also breaking records were the 4 x 100m Jamaican quartet of Steve Mullings, Michael Frater, Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell as well as Jamaican Melanie Walker in the 400m hurdles.
