2008 is the 100th anniversary of women taking collective action on 8 March. To mark this milestone, Education International commissioned Argentine artist Nora Patrich to create a commemorative poster.
Patrich's painting, to be unveiled 7 March, depicts women of diverse cultures carrying books, symbolic of education, and bread and roses, the symbols of International Women’s Day. Together the women are emerging from a darkened doorway into the light of sisterhood and solidarity. The poster is available at: www.ei-ie.org/gender.
A painter, muralist and sculptor with a long history of activism, Patrich was honoured last autumn with the prestigious "Maestro de Vida" award from the Confederación de Trabajadores de la Educación de la República Argentina, an EI affiliate. The prize is granted to people whose life and work embody the social justice values CTERA promotes.

Teachers in St. Maarten are on strike. On Wednesday morning it was evident that the Teachers were serious about stepping up their protest action, calling on Government to make good on their promises that the adjustment for the new salary scale and the back pay, would have been payed out on the 15th of February. The teachers after their meeting this morning went to St. Peters and visited the St. Maarten academy and other schools in the area, where teachers joined a motorcade blaring their horns and shouting, "No more promises".

National Development: the teacher’s role
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”
These are the words of Nelson Mandela who almost single handedly turned the wheel of fortune and fate in the South African nation.
For the people of South Africa, the doors of development and success seemed forever shut under the oppression of apartheid. Like the doors of apartheid, the doors of development and success in any nation easily remain closed to its children. In Trinidad and Tobago, in 2007, the Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers Association calls on all its members and on all teachers to demonstrate the courage, resilience and faith in human destiny that Mandela showed in order to liberate his people. The teacher’s role in National Development is first identified as an obligation to create possibilities of success for students in their charge. It must not however stop there. This is why today at eight district conventions throughout the nation, distinguished citizens, including (name guest speaker) seated at the head table have been asked to explore with us their perspectives on the teacher’s role in national development.

“Quality Teachers for Quality Education”
According to UNESCO, World Teachers’ Day represents a significant attempt to raise awareness, understanding and appreciation of the vital contribution that teachers make to education and development. Thus the Caribbean Union of Teachers strongly believes that Caribbean Teachers should join with others around the world to celebrate this significant day.

The voices of teachers and their unions must be heard throughout the Caribbean Region. Our voices must be heard because we are living in a time when we are faced with challenges to education. Today we claim Education for All. We must be clear that we mean Quality Education for All and that quality education is delivered by Quality Teachers. It means that as Caribbean Teachers we have to redouble our efforts to focus on our systems of education and to ensure that they are able to deliver quality. Therefore, the theme for World Teachers’ Day “Quality Teachers for Quality Education” is indeed timely and appropriate.

In a symbolic act of relief, TTUTA president Clyde Permell cuts off his red protest hand band to signal that the teachers row over wages had been settled with thousands getting a 100 per cent increase.
Snip went the scissors yesterday, as TTUTA president Clyde Permell symbolically cut off his red protest hand band to signal that teachers had settled their year old wage row.

Teachers will therefore be singing extra sweetly in December, as they will begin to receive their salary adjustments, some up to 100 per cent, as well as retroactive monies then.
